Miffy Art Parade

In 2015 Miffy turned 60! One of the events that was organised is the Miffy Art Parade: A project that honours Miffy, her creator, and her admirers of all ages worldwide. The Miffy Art Parade unites, inspires and contributes to a better future in partnership with UNICEF. All replicas are designed by artists and are hand-painted.

Already three generations grew up with Miffy in the Netherlands. But Miffy is also very popular in other countries. Since she crossed the border to Japan and England in the 1960s, you can find her now in dozens of countries all over the world; not only as the leading character of the books, but also on numerous products and as a designer icon – the world-famous creation of Dick Bruna is as popular as ever.

The logo for 60 years of Miffy shows how Miffy has evolved over the years. In the early years, Miffy looks like a soft toy animal with awkward ears. From 1963 onwards, she looks at her readers candidly with her little black eyes, has two rigid pointy ears and chubby cheeks. Later on, her ears and face become a little rounder and more balanced. Also, the proportions of her body, which became a little rounder, and her head changed.

On 23 August 1927, Dick Bruna was born in Utrecht and he died on 16 February 2017. Father Bruna was a publisher at A.W. Bruna & Zoon, the publishing company his great-grandfather founded in 1868. Although he was meant to follow in his father’s footsteps as a publisher, son Dick managed to convince his father that he was unsuited for the job. In 1951 he started working as a book cover designer at the publishing company, and he contributed substantially to the success of the Zwarte Beertjes paperback series. His powerful, clear and simple book cover designs and posters are still very popular amongst collectors.
