A great variety of geographical spaces can be found in the Arequipa territory in Peru. The region has Andean valleys, pampas, a volcanic chain, high Andean plateau and deserts that border the sea. No wonder that the variety of birds is enormous. There are numbers of fascinating and impressive winged ones, some of which apparently preferred to settle on this lovely elephant.
The term Doucai literally means ‘contrasting colours’, or ‘compete for colour’. Doucai was a porcelain enamelling technique perfected during the reign of the Chinese Emperor Xuande during the Ming Dynasty. This created wonderfully decorative pieces, true examples of which are rare and highly sought by collectors. That certainly applies to this elephant as well.
