Victoria Verbaan is a South African artist known for her watercolour portraits of women. She studied fine art at the University of Cape Town and art direction and graphic design at the Red & Yellow School, where she graduated top of her year. In 2008 she moved back to KwaZulu-Natal, where she devoted herself entirely to illustration, painting and product development. Today she works from her studio on the Bellevue Campus in Kloof.
Her work attracted international attention: it appeared in British Vogue, Elle Decorations and The World of Interiors. Wallpaper Magazine named her one of twenty reasons to visit South Africa. That recognition led, among other things, to a collaboration with Heinen Delfts Blauw, the Dutch brand that has been producing hand-painted Delft Blue ceramics since 1898. After a visit to the Heinen factory, a collection of wall plates was born in which Verbaan's watercolour style and traditional Delft Blue come together.
The work of Victoria Verbaan is recognisable by four elements. First, the watercolour technique: soft, flowing lines and transparent colour layers typical of watercolour, even when the work is applied to ceramics. Second, the female portraits: her subjects are always women, depicted as self-assured, vulnerable and dreamy all at once. Third, the limited colour palette: predominantly Delft Blue, complemented by subtle accents of purple and gold. Finally, the surrealist elements: flowers, butterflies or abstract shapes surrounding the portrait, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. Like Gerdine Duijsens, Verbaan portrays women with character, but where Duijsens works expressionistically, Verbaan opts for the softness of watercolour. Frida Kahlo and Lisa Larson share her preference for art that tells a personal, female story.
At Pop Art Statues, four ceramic wall plates by Victoria Verbaan are available, all 31 cm in diameter. The collection includes Cleavage, Miss Lips, Sexy Lady and Undress Me. Each plate features a different female portrait in Verbaan's signature style, executed in Delft Blue with purple and gold accents. The plates are made of ceramic and produced by Heinen Delfts Blauw. The retail price is €29.97 per piece (reduced from €49.95).
The plates are intended as wall decoration and come with a hanging fixture on the back.
The wall plates by Victoria Verbaan make a great gift for lovers of modern art with a nod to Dutch tradition. They suit people who appreciate Delft Blue but are looking for a contemporary, playful twist. The female portraits have a sensual quality, making them well suited as a Mother's Day gift, a birthday gift or a housewarming present.
Less suitable for those expecting traditional Delft Blue with windmills and tulips — the portraits are decidedly modern and sometimes provocative. The titles (Cleavage, Undress Me) already indicate that these are bold depictions. Not the right gift for someone with a conservative decorating style.
