Lisa Larson: Scandinavian ceramics with humour and warmth

Lisa Larson was born on 9 September 1931 in Harlunda, a village in the municipality of Almhult in Smaland — the same region where IKEA originated. She studied from 1949 to 1954 at the Academy of Crafts and Design (HDK) in Gothenburg. During a Scandinavian art competition after her graduation, she was spotted by Stig Lindberg, the creative director of the Gustavsberg porcelain factory, who immediately offered her a contract. From 1954 to 1980, Larson worked at Gustavsberg, where she grew into one of the most important Swedish ceramicists of the twentieth century. After her departure, she worked freelance for several Swedish companies. In 1992, she co-founded the Gustavsberg Ceramic Studio with former colleagues. Lisa Larson passed away on 11 March 2024 at the age of 92.

How to recognise Larson's style

The work of Lisa Larson can be recognised by four characteristics. First, the material: she worked almost exclusively with stoneware clay mixed with chamotte (finely ground fired clay), which gives her sculptures a grainy, earthy texture. Second, the form language: her figures are always rounded, simplified and slightly exaggerated — a cat is rounder than a real cat, a lion more stately than nature allows. Third, the humour: in almost every piece there is a wink, whether it's a cross-eyed bird or a lion with an absurdly dignified face. Fourth, the decoration: Larson often used graphic patterns and bright colours reminiscent of Scandinavian folk art, but with a modern twist.

Like Efrosini and Jellie van Kranen, Larson created artisan animal figurines with character, but where Efrosini uses glass fusing and Van Kranen uses raku ceramics, Larson worked with chamotte stoneware. Her work shares with Francois Pompon a love of simplified, rounded animal forms.
