The inspiration for Ruby came from the unique beauty of the pomegranate fruit, whose seeds are similar to rubies in their deep red colour and round shape. Pomegranates are extremely nutritious and believed to be an auspicious fruit in the Thai culture. I also see some of the same qualities in elephants, Thailand’s national animal. Elephants have been around for centuries and are highly revered as sacred animals. Therefore, I think using pomegranates as an element in the statue is fitting.
One of Joanna’s best loved subjects is the ‘hare’. She illustrates this, taking a piece of Wiltshire up to London. The design incorporates mystical senses of the moon, stars and crop circles; and connects the hare tot he fertility goddess.
