Over the course of the 2000s, he grew into one of the most famous contemporary artists in the world — not through galleries, but through illegal murals on buildings, bridges and walls in cities worldwide.
Banksy’s work appears unannounced and is claimed afterwards through his own channels. His artworks have sold for millions at auction, but the artist himself emphasises that street art belongs to and is for everyone. In 2018, the painting “Girl with Balloon” went through a shredder at the moment it was auctioned at Sotheby’s — an act orchestrated by Banksy himself that made worldwide headlines.
