Banksy: the anonymous artist who turned the street into a museum

Banksy is an anonymous British street artist whose identity has never been officially confirmed. He was presumably born around 1974 in Bristol, England, and began with graffiti in the city’s underground scene during the 1990s. Over the course of the 2000s, he grew into one of the most famous contemporary artists in the world — not through galleries, but through illegal murals on buildings, bridges and walls in cities worldwide.

Banksy’s work appears unannounced and is claimed afterwards through his own channels. His artworks have sold for millions at auction, but the artist himself emphasises that street art belongs to and is for everyone. In 2018, the painting “Girl with Balloon” went through a shredder at the moment it was auctioned at Sotheby’s — an act orchestrated by Banksy himself that made worldwide headlines.

How to recognise Banksy’s style

Banksy’s work has several instantly recognisable characteristics:

  • Stencil technique: Banksy works almost exclusively with stencils, making his images sharp, graphic and quickly reproducible.
  • Satirical humour: many works contain an ironic or sarcastic message. Well-known examples include a flower thrower hurling a bouquet instead of a Molotov cocktail, or two kissing police officers.
  • Black-and-white contrasts with colour accents: most works are predominantly black and white, with a single colour accent — a red balloon heart, a yellow flower — that draws the eye and underscores the message.
  • Social commentary: Banksy consistently addresses themes such as capitalism, militarism, climate change, police violence and social inequality.

Like Kedarone and Herman Brood, Banksy uses raw, graphic techniques to make a direct statement. Where Britto uses colour and optimism, Banksy opts for black-and-white contrasts and social commentary — two extremes of pop art.

Who is Banksy a good gift for?

Banksy products are suitable for someone who is interested in street art, social commentary or contemporary culture. The mugs make an accessible birthday or Christmas gift that appeals to a wide audience. The tiles are nice wall decor for someone who wants a subtle art statement in their home.

Banksy products are less suitable for those looking for exclusive art purchases or collectibles — these are mass-produced items, not limited editions. For someone who does not appreciate street art or political art, Banksy is probably not the right choice.
