Fons van Dommelen, born in 1964, is a sculptor and designer from Brabant with more than twenty years of experience in form and design. After training in graphic design, he turned to sculpture, focusing on works that explore the tension between old and new. His output spans two areas: three-dimensional sculptures and works on canvas and bas-relief.
In addition to his own art collection, Van Dommelen co-designed the Profisti series for Parastone together with Ed van Rosmalen. In this collection they aim to capture the essence of craftsmanship in hand-painted figurines depicting professions and trades — from dentist to architect, from firefighter to chef.
The work of Fons van Dommelen is recognisable by a number of constants. First, the primitive visual language: the forms reference ancient art traditions — African sculptures, prehistoric figurines — with simplified, almost archetypal silhouettes. Second, the contrasting use of colour: where the forms are austere and elemental, the painting is explosive, with vivid, vibrant colours that give the work a contemporary feel. Third, the recurring motifs: elegant female figures, powerful bulls and graceful cats form the core of his visual vocabulary. Finally, the craftsmanship: each sculpture is cast in resin and then individually hand-painted, so every piece differs subtly.
