(1913–1915)
At an early age, Modigliani went to the marble quarries in Carrara to learn sculpting. Later he became fascinated by traditional sculptures from Africa and Oceania. These influences are immediately recognizable in this stone-carved head. It is an inward-looking portrait, where the perfect vertical lines determine the shape. It has a meditative and sacred appearance, and in that respect it fits in with Modigliani’s Hebrew background.
