“The Venus of Willendorf” Miniature

The most famous of the prehistoric female statues, known as Venus statues. The voluptuous female figure was carved in the Upper Paleolithic from Oölitic limestone, a type of stone that did not originate in this area. It was found in 1908 in the Austrian village of Willendorf.

The Venus of Willendorf takes the cake in terms of obesity. The female sexual characteristics are depicted very explicitly and enlarged, in contrast to what apparently mattered less, such as the face, arms and legs.
