Bal du Moulin de la Galette (1876)
The large painting of the ball is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of Impressionist painting. It shows a typical Sunday afternoon at the Moulin de la Galette, where ordinary Parisians, dressed in their best, enjoy a glass of wine and a modest meal.
The Moulin de la Galette was located at the highest point of the Montmartre district in Paris. There was a mill there, whose miller baked a particularly tasty brown bread, the galette. It was sold on the spot, and so a popular place to go was created where the Sunday scenes inspired artists such as Van Gogh, Pisarro, Toulouse-Lautrec and Renoir.
