Mia Coppola: colourful female figures and playful animals

Mia Coppola was born on 18 October 1977 and is a Dutch full-time artist. Her artistic career began with shaping and painting ceramics and clay products. Gradually she moved towards working with resin, which gave her the freedom to create larger, more durable sculptures. Coppola cites as her inspirations the French-American sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle (known for her Nanas), the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi and the Italian-American sculptor Simon Rodia. These influences are visible in her work: the rounded female forms of De Saint Phalle, the organic lines of Gaudi and the mosaic-like colour patterns of Rodia come together in her own distinctive style.

How to recognise Coppola’s style

The work of Mia Coppola stands out on four points. First, the round forms: all her sculptures — whether female figures, giraffes or abstract objects — are built from curved, flowing lines. There are no sharp angles; everything invites you to touch it. Second, the use of colour: each sculpture is hand-painted in vivid, cheerful colours. Coppola works with patterns that reference well-known art movements — from Mondrian colour blocks to Gaudi mosaics — but always in her own interpretation. Third, the themes: her female figures (the Molly & Dolly line) symbolise strong, free, independent women. The animal figures (Crazy Giraffes) have that same playful energy. Fourth, the craftsmanship: although the basic forms are cast in resin, each sculpture is individually hand-painted, making every piece unique in its colour details.

Like Gerdine Duijsens, Coppola portrays women with character and humour, but where Duijsens works from the expressionist tradition, Coppola opts for pop art patterns and round forms. Didi Diaz and Fons van Dommelen share her preference for colourful, hand-painted sculptures with a playful appearance.

Coppola collection at Pop Art Statues

At Pop Art Statues, Mia Coppola is one of the more prominent artists in the range. The collection is divided into three main lines: Molly & Dolly (female figures), Dancing Beauties (dancing figures) and Crazy Giraffes (hand-painted giraffe figures). All sculptures are individually hand-painted, making each piece unique. Visit the product pages for current prices and available colour variations.

Who is Coppola a good gift for?

Mia Coppola is a strong gift for someone who loves colour and has an interior that could use a statement piece. The Molly & Dolly figures particularly appeal to women who love pop art and female empowerment. The Crazy Giraffes are an accessible entry point: affordable, decorative and with enough humour to also suit people who are not necessarily “art lovers”. The Molly & Dolly figures are a popular choice for Mother’s Day. The sculptures also work wonderfully as a housewarming gift thanks to their colourful, atmosphere-defining appearance. Less suitable for lovers of sleek, minimalist design — Coppola’s sculptures are emphatically present in colour and form. Also not ideal for those who value lifelike representations; her work is deliberately stylised and exaggerated.
