Behind the name Kraan Crea is Herma Kraan, a craftswoman from Doesburg who has been making handmade gifts from wood and stone for more than 25 years. Her speciality is calligraphy on natural materials, but in recent years she has expanded her repertoire to include miniature figurines on petrified wood. Kraan Crea’s motto — simplicity, reuse, sustainability — is not a marketing term but a working method: she literally makes something from almost nothing, transforming found and recycled materials into small works of art.
Herma Kraan has been a familiar face at art fairs and markets throughout the Netherlands for decades. She has indicated that she plans to scale back her market appearances in the coming years due to the physical demands, but she continues to work on commissions and new designs.
How to recognise Kraan’s style
The miniature figurines by Kraan Crea are recognisable by a few consistent elements. First, the petrified wood base: each figurine stands on a piece of weathered, petrified wood that serves as a natural base. No two bases are alike, giving each piece its own character. Second, the scale: the figurines are extremely small, often no more than 2 to 5 centimetres tall. The power lies in the minimalist expression of big emotions. Third, the hand-painting: each figurine is hand-painted with attention to detail, despite the small size. Finally, the narrative titles: names such as “Samen”, “Even Alleen” and “Wijdse Blik” give each figurine an emotional charge that invites the viewer to imagine their own story. Like Urmila Massaar and Jellie van Kranen, Kraan Crea creates handmade one-of-a-kind pieces where the natural material determines the character of each work. Efrosini shares her love of artisan craftsmanship and small-scale, personal art objects.

Who is Kraan Crea a good gift for?
The miniature figurines by Kraan Crea are ideally suited as a small, personal gift. The narrative titles make them fitting for specific occasions: “Samen” for a couple moving in together, “Even Alleen” for someone who deserves a moment of peace. The price point of €19 makes them suitable as a birthday token, a thank-you gift or as an addition to a larger present. “Samen” is a popular choice for a wedding or anniversary gift, while “Even Alleen” makes a thoughtful birthday or Christmas present.
They appeal to people who value handmade work and sustainability. The figurines are small enough to find a spot anywhere — on a desk, in a display case or on a windowsill.
Less suitable if you’re looking for a large, eye-catching gift that immediately commands attention in a room. The charm of Kraan Crea lies in intimacy and the small gesture — if you’re after a statement piece, look elsewhere. Also less suitable for young children due to the very small parts.
How do I care for a miniature figurine by Kraan Crea?
Keep the petrified wood base dry — do not submerge it in water. Dust carefully with a dry cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. The figurines are intended for indoor use.
