Romero Britto was born on 6 October 1963 in Recife, Brazil. As a self-taught artist, he developed his signature style after a trip to Paris in 1983, where he saw the work of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso for the first time. Since 1988 he has lived and worked from his studio Britto Central in Miami.
