Didi Diaz: childlike imagination in colourful sculptures

Didi Diaz grew up in a Filipino artist family. Her grandfather was a nationally recognised realist painter in the 1970s. Diaz earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design, but felt she wanted to pursue her own artistic direction that set her apart from the tradition she grew up in. She found that direction through an unexpected path: teaching young children in the United States.

While drawing and crafting with young children, Diaz discovered how powerful their uninhibited view of the world is. She began creating designs that capture the playfulness and humour of children in an adult art form. In 2018 she presented her first collection of sculptures, followed by a second series in 2019. All her works are authentic, original designs.

How to recognise Diaz’s style

Didi Diaz’s sculptures are recognisable by several consistent elements. First, the colour combinations: she uses bold, contrasting colours and patchwork patterns reminiscent of children’s drawings, but with an adult sense of harmony. Second, the cartoon-like forms: her animals have exaggerated proportions — plump elephants, broad bulldogs, elongated giraffes — that balance between humour and elegance. Third, the female body as a theme: alongside animals, Diaz creates sculptures of female figures, such as the Eva series and the Torso Picasso, in which she depicts feminine forms in a playful, abstract way. Finally, there is the child’s perspective: her work is deliberately designed to be appreciated by both the very youngest and the very oldest, as she herself puts it.
