Because Degas’ eyesight deteriorated rapidly after the age of fifty, he had to increasingly rely on his sense of touch. Sculpture turned out to be a solution. Although he showed his work to almost no one in this last period of his life, he decided, after working on Het Danseresje for two years, to submit the work for the exhibition of impressionists in Paris.
