Miffy Hug
He says about his statue Miffy Hug: ‘Miffy is an icon and the challenge was to look further than just an appealing decoration. I searched for a way to make this life-sized Miffy my own. I found this way by working with shapes that come loose from the icon but, at the same time, confirm the iconic part of it. A hug by two children, a boy and a girl. They press their faces against Miffy’s and create a new shape. That is how image and meaning come together. Using a black-and-white silhouette is in line with my own work. In order to take it one step further, I switched the colours: the children are white and Miffy is black. The figures are drawn on Miffy by hand, taped up with tape and paper and then sprayed with paint by vehicle painter Mark van Wijk. After that, Miffy was finished with a layer of high-gloss lacquer to give her an extra shine.’
