La Folie des Grandeurs (1967)

In the last year of Magritte’s life, the famous gallery owner Alexandre Iolas asked him if he had ever considered making sculptures. The painter had certainly thought of that, but these would have to be exclusively images based on motifs from his paintings.

Just a few weeks later, Magritte showed Iolas three detailed sketches, with precise dimensions, of a statue he called Megalomania. It was a three-dimensional elaboration of his painting La Folie des Grandeurs from 1962. He had first developed the theme in 1948.

Seven more sketches for bronze statues followed. Magritte assessed and corrected all wax models in the bronze foundry in Verona. He was no longer able to experience the casting of the bronze statues.
