Artist: Mark Janssen (1974).
Midsummer night
He enjoyed stepping into the world of Miffy and have this icon from his beloved children’s books visit him in his studio. As a children’s book artist, he wanted Miffy to play a role in an illustrated story. He didn’t let her iconic appearance disappear under a layer of paint and didn’t just use her as a steppingstone, but he placed her as a personality in time and space. As if she is there. Being herself, yet being a Miffy who sets foot in the world of Mark Janssen. He says about his Miffy statue Midsummer night: ‘A clear night with moon and stars. With friends. Are they resting after a long journey or are they sad? A violin and a trumpet are the only things you hear. A tranquil image that tempts you to finish the story yourself. Where are they coming from and where are they going to …’.
