Banksy’s iconic artwork “Girl with Balloon” first appeared in 2002 as a mural on London’s South Bank, accompanied by the message “There is always hope”.
This sentence suggests that the work conveys a message of hope and optimism.
In 2018, during an auction at Sotheby’s, a version of “Girl with Balloon” was partially shredded immediately after the sale. Banksy later revealed that he had built a chipper into the frame in case the work was ever auctioned. He stated, “The urge to destroy is also a creative urge.”
Although Banksy rarely makes direct statements about his work, these actions and messages suggest that “Girl with Balloon” explores themes of hope, transience and the value of art.
