Banksy Tile ‘Kissing Coppers’

Banksy’s “Kissing Coppers” is a 2004 stencil artwork depicting two British police officers kissing. It originally appeared on the wall of the Prince Albert Pub in Brighton, a city known as the LGBTQ+ center of the UK.

Banksy has made no public statements about the significance of this particular work. However, given its location and subject matter, “Kissing Coppers” is often interpreted as a commentary on homophobia and as a celebration of love and acceptance regardless of sexual orientation.

The artwork was removed in 2011 and sold at auction in Miami for $575,000. A replica has since been placed in its original location, making it an enduring symbol on Brighton’s streetscape.
Although Banksy himself has not provided a direct explanation of “Kissing Coppers,” the context and imagery suggest that the work is intended to challenge traditional views of authority and sexuality and to stimulate discussions about LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance.
