Vase van Gogh “Sunflowers”

Sunflowers (1888, fourth version)

In 1887, Van Gogh painted four still lifes with reclining sunflowers in Paris, where he lived with his brother Theo. The works were very popular with his good friend Paul Gauguin, whose opinion Van Gogh valued greatly.

A year later, Van Gogh hoped to impress his Gauguin with four new ‘Sunflowers’. They were intended for his friend’s bedroom in ‘the Yellow House’ in Arles, where the two artists lived under one roof for nine turbulent weeks from October to December.

Three more versions followed in 1889, which strongly resembled the earlier series of four.
